Tubing may be considered if your child has had:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Frequent infections that are close together, such as three or more infections in six months, or four within the last year<\/li><li>Fluid in their ears for several months<\/li><li>Particularly painful infections<\/li><li>Infections that do not respond to antibiotics<\/li><li>Temporary <a href=\"https:\/\/entfortwayne.com\/hearing-center\/pediatric-hearing-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hearing loss<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"during-the-procedure\">During the Procedure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ear tubes (also referred to as tympanostomy tubes) are tiny cylinders, made from plastic or other materials, which are surgically inserted into the eardrum. They will usually remain in your child\u2019s ears for anywhere from six months to several years. They will either fall out on their own or need to be surgically removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The surgery, known as myringotomy, is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. It is usually quick, lasting about 15-30 minutes in total. Your child should not experience any pain during or after the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Myringotomy is a common and very safe procedure. Complications are rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"benefits-of-ear-tubes\">Benefits of Ear Tubes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown an <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0194599814525576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improved quality of life for children<\/a> who got ear tubes. Some of the things tubes can do include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Provide ventilation to the ear and allow fluids to drain. Both of which can reduce the chances of an ear infection.<\/li><li>Reverse hearing loss caused by fluid in the middle ear<\/li><li>Help correct any speech or balance issues that may have been caused by frequent infections<\/li><li>Improve sleep quality<\/li><li>Improve general mood and behavior<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>No one wants their child to be dealing with frequent illness.
