The term postnasal drip (PND) describes when mucus drips down the back of your throat. Because the mucus irritates the throat, postnasal drip is associated with chronic cough. According to one article, “PND is a common complaint in primary care and ear-nose-throat offices.” Below we review how to stop postnasal drip.
Home Remedies
Certain home remedies may help relieve postnasal drip, such as:
- Staying hydrated. This can help thin your mucus.
- Using a humidifier. Keeping the air moist can also thin mucus.
- Propping your head up. When you sleep, keeping your head propped up can prevent mucus from collecting in the back of your throat.
Steroid Nasal Sprays
Steroid nasal sprays are the next best treatment if home remedies don’t provide relief. They work by decreasing inflammation in the nasal passages and start working in as little as a few hours. These are most effective if taken regularly rather than as-needed. Steroid nasal sprays are available over-the-counter and as a prescription.
Non-Steroid Nasal Sprays
Non-steroidal nasal sprays are another good option that works by reducing congestion, stopping the production of mucus or shrinking the blood vessels in the nose.
Oral Antihistamines
If your postnasal drip is caused by allergies, an oral antihistamine could be effective. These help because they block the production of the chemical histamine, which your immune system releases during an allergy attack. Second-generation antihistamines, like Claritin®, Allegra® and ZYRTEC®, are preferable because they thin mucus and have fewer side effects than first-generation ones.
Saline Nasal Spray/Irrigation
Saline solution is water that contains sodium chloride, or salt. There are two ways to administer saline to relieve postnasal drip: a nasal spray or nasal irrigation. A nasal spray can be purchased at Fort Wayne Custom Rx on East Dupont Road, and you can follow the directions on the package. Nasal irrigation requires a Neti pot to flush out the sinuses and nasal cavities. Always use boiled (then cooled) water or distilled water, or buy a prepared saline wash kit.
