Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA)

Also known as a fine-needle biopsy, a fine-needle aspiration collects a sample of cells from a lump or mass. It may be performed on the neck to biopsy nodules in the thyroid gland, abnormal lymph nodes or lumps in the salivary glands.

Benefits of a Fine-Needle Aspiration

While many are benign, a mass or lump on your neck may indicate a serious problem, such as cancer. An FNA helps determine this and allows your care team to guide you through the next steps for treatment.

The procedure is quick, has minimal discomfort and can typically be completed in your doctor’s office.

What Happens During the Procedure

Your doctor may inject local anesthesia to reduce pain during the procedure.

Then, a small needle is inserted into the lump to remove cells for biopsy. This process may be repeated a few times to ensure enough cells are collected. If the lump is difficult to feel, an ultrasound may be used to help properly direct the needle.
